Faculty Lecture Series - Chemical EngineeringWednesday, February 19, 2025 at 5:00 PM until 6:00 PMPacific Standard Time UTC -08:00Led by Chemical Engineering Professor Todd Squires, learn about the science and engineering of materials and products you’ve used every day, yet never think about. From shampoos to shave gels, vaccines to paints, these products rely on fascinating science and complex engineering to perform a bunch of tasks simultaneously. Professor Squires will talk about the science behind these amazing products, about current challenges in the field and chemical engineering more broadly, along with some of his own work. He’ll also talk about some of the exciting opportunities he’s leading in this area at UCSB for scientists and non-scientists alike. Todd Squires has been a Professor of UC Santa Barbara's Chemical Engineering since 2005, and is faculty advisor for UCSB's student chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. He earned undergraduate degrees in Physics and Russian Language and Literature at UCLA in 1995, and his PhD in Physics from Harvard in 2002. His research involves "complex fluids", with applications in consumer products, the function and dysfunction of lung surfactants, and water treatment membranes. He has two kids in college and one in junior high school, which has helped him understand both how exciting -- and how stressful -- the transition to college can be.
