Faculty Lecture: Religious Studies

    Led by Professor Joseph Blankholm, this lecture delves into the ways we often overlook the unique beliefs nonreligious people and the communities they form due to negative terms used to describe them amongst society. Professor Blankholm will cover some of the variety among the nonreligious and shares what is distinctive about atheists, humanists, and spiritual people, while providing insight into what we can expect as religion continues to decline in the United States.

    Joseph Blankholm is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research focuses mostly on secularism and spirituality, and his courses at UCSB include Intro to Religion and Politics, Religion and Pop Culture, and Religion and Technology (a course he teaches in virtual reality). He is the author of The Secular Paradox: On the Religiosity of the Not Religious (NYU 2022), and his next book will be published with W. W. Norton.
