Selective majors (especially in engineering, computer science, and performance-based) continue to be among the most competitive programs at UCSB and across the UC system. When students are strong applicants but not quite aligned with the preparation or competitiveness of these majors, counselors are often left searching for realistic alternatives that still match the student’s interests. This session will provide an in-depth look at alternative pathways for students drawn to engineering or other selective majors. We’ll explore related disciplines at UCSB (such as physics, math, statistics, environmental studies, technology management, and interdisciplinary science programs) that allow students to pursue comparable skills, career outcomes, and hands-on experiences without entering a highly selective major.
